Today, we remember Boudreaux Prudhomme – a Vietnam War veteran, a cherished member of our community at Elison Park, and a man who truly knew how to live life to the fullest. Despite the brevity of his stay with us, he left an indelible mark on our hearts.

A Hero’s Story
Boudreaux was no ordinary resident. His life was a testament to bravery, resilience, and compassion.
As a door gunner in Vietnam, he faced unimaginable danger every day. The average lifespan of a helicopter door gunner was only two weeks, making up over 10 percent of the overall casualties in the Vietnam conflict. But Boudreaux didn’t just survive; he thrived.
Shot down in hostile territory, he carried his injured pilot to safety, surviving on bugs, tree roots, and rainwater. The Department of Navy awarded him medals for his heroic actions. His military service is a story of courage and selflessness that continues to inspire us all.
Living Life to the Fullest
Despite being at Elison Park for only a “season,” Boudreaux made every moment count. He participated in our senior living activities when he could. Engagement and outings were tailored to his preferences as well.
Our Executive Director, Zade Watts, fondly recalls taking him to a secret fishing spot in northwest Houston. With every nibble on the line, Boudreaux’s face would light up with an infectious joy. On this trip, amidst the tranquility of nature and the thrill of the catch, Boudreaux truly lived.
His daughter later shared that she hadn’t seen such a radiant smile on her father’s face in years.
That day, despite facing a terminal illness, Boudreaux was alive and truly lived. He embodied the spirit of living each day to its fullest, a mantra we strive to uphold at Elison Park.
A Lasting Tribute
In his memory, the team at Elison Park is refurbishing Boudreaux’s favorite rocking chair and dedicating it with a memorial plaque. This gesture is a tribute and physical reminder of the strength and resilience Boudreaux embodied.
The rocking chair, where Boudreaux spent many peaceful hours, will symbolize his spirit – strong, resilient, and full of life. We will present this renovated chair to his family, a small token of our deep respect for Boudreaux and his profound impact on our community.
Honoring Boudreaux
At his memorial service, Boudreaux was honored by his local Masonic Lodge and a USMC Color Guard. His life story moved many to tears, reflecting his profound impact on those around him.
Boudreaux Prudhomme may no longer be with us, but his legacy continues to inspire.
His life story – from his heroic service in Vietnam to his final fishing trip – exemplifies the power of resilience, the importance of living each day to the fullest, and the profound impact one person can have on a community.
As we fondly remember Boudreaux, we are reminded of the words often echoed by one of our team members, “But today, he lives.” Today and every day, Boudreaux lives on in our hearts, our memories, and the lessons he taught us about truly living.
